Why you need an Internal Daylight or Sunlight Assessment
Internal daylight and sunlight assessments are essential for Planning Permission, BREEAM, and Home Quality Mark compliance. At SEES, we deliver expert reports and practical design advice to ensure your project meets these key regulatory and sustainability standards.
We offer assessments for:
- BREEAM Credits for BREEAM Residential and Commercial
- Planning Submissions
- Basement and Refurbishment Projects
- Sites with Limited Natural Light
Complying with 2022 BRE Guidance
Following the 2022 update to BRE 209, assessments must align with BS EN 17037. This includes two accepted methods:
- Daylight Factor (DF)
- Daylight Illuminance (DI)
Our assessments determine whether internal spaces achieve sufficient natural light levels, with a focus on meeting the BREEAM criteria of:
- Average Daylight Factor ≥ 2%
- Uniformity Ratio ≥ 0.4 across 80% of NLA
What We Provide
We analyse proposed layouts to:
- Measure daylight levels in each room
- Evaluate compliance with BRE Good Practice
- Recommend design improvements to enhance daylight, such as window adjustments and layout changes
- Support BREEAM, planning, and prior approval applications
Our reports are tailored for developments with challenging lighting conditions, including basements, extensions, and urban infills.
