Stepping Away from the Desk: A Day at Emsworth Cookery School

At SEES, we’re always focused on helping our clients achieve the best possible outcomes, whether that’s through sustainability consultancy, building compliance, energy assessments or certification. But behind every project is a team of people working hard to deliver quality, consistency, and continuous improvement.

Over the past few months, we’ve been particularly busy. Alongside supporting our clients on a wide range of projects, we’ve been reviewing and improving our internal quality management processes, streamlining the customer journey, and investing in systems that will help us continue to provide the highest levels of service.

With several exciting projects on the horizon, it felt like the perfect time to step away from our desks and spend some time together outside the office.

Recently, the team visited the fantastic Emsworth Cookery School for a day of cooking, collaboration and, most importantly, eating.

Our challenge was to prepare a selection of Thai curries, sushi and homemade ice cream. While many of us are used to solving technical problems and analysing building performance, the kitchen presented a very different set of challenges.

As with any team activity, everyone brought their own strengths. Some demonstrated impressive culinary skills, while others discovered that accuracy and speed don’t always go hand in hand when it comes to chopping vegetables. Watching a slightly overheated assessor methodically work through a mountain of preparation became one of the day’s more memorable moments.

Our newest team member, Matt, also played an important role. Like many young people blessed with an apparently endless appetite, he took it upon himself to ensure that none of the finished dishes went unappreciated. His commitment to quality control at the dining table was second to none.

Beyond the food and the laughter, the day served as a valuable reminder of the importance of taking time to connect as a team.

In a fast-paced industry, it can be easy to move from one deadline to the next without stopping to reflect on what has been achieved. Sharing a meal that we’ve prepared together is a simple thing, but it creates the opportunity to relax, catch up and enjoy each other’s company away from project plans, site visits and compliance requirements.

At SEES, we’re proud of the work we do, but we’re equally proud of the team behind it. The expertise, commitment, and willingness to continually improve are what drive our business forward, and days like this remind us why building a positive culture matters.

A huge thank you to the team at Emsworth Cookery School for providing such an enjoyable experience. We left with a few new cooking skills, some full stomachs and plenty of stories that will no doubt continue to resurface around the office for years to come.

Because sometimes, after months of hard work and continuous improvement, it’s nice to simply cook a pot of food, sit down together and enjoy the results.
