Winchester Green Week – Carbon Clinic

From Retrofit Assessment to Carbon Plan – Helping Community Buildings Prepare for a Low Carbon Future

Many community buildings are the heart of their local area, but they often face increasing energy costs, ageing building fabric and the challenge of reducing carbon emissions with limited budgets.

At Sadler Energy & Environmental Services Ltd (SEES), we recently completed a comprehensive retrofit assessment for Durley Community Centre’s Thresher Hall, providing the trustees with a practical roadmap towards a lower-carbon future.

A Whole-Building Retrofit Assessment

Our assessment looked at the building as a whole, considering both its current performance and the opportunities available to improve energy efficiency and reduce operational carbon emissions.

Using advanced Integrated Environmental Solutions (IES VE) dynamic simulation software, we developed a detailed digital model of the building to evaluate a range of retrofit measures, including:

  • Building fabric improvements.
  • Air Source Heat Pumps (ASHPs).
  • Solar photovoltaic (PV) systems.
  • LED lighting upgrades.
  • Heating system performance.
  • Energy demand and operational carbon emissions.
  • Multiple decarbonisation scenarios.
  • Indicative running cost savings.
  • A phased implementation strategy.

Rather than recommending individual technologies in isolation, the assessment considered how each measure would work together to achieve the greatest overall benefit for the building.

Creating a Practical Carbon Plan

A successful decarbonisation project isn’t simply about installing solar panels or replacing a boiler. It’s about understanding the building, identifying the most effective improvements, and creating a realistic plan that can be delivered over time.

The assessment for Durley Community Centre provides exactly that, a practical carbon reduction roadmap that can support future funding applications and guide investment decisions as opportunities arise.

Introducing SEES Carbon Clinics

Inspired by this project, we’re pleased to launch our Carbon Clinics as part of Winchester Green Week 2026.

We’re offering five FREE one-hour Carbon Clinics for community organisations across the Winchester district, including:

  • Community centres
  • Village halls
  • Schools
  • Charities
  • Parish councils
  • Community trusts

During each session, we’ll discuss your building, your energy challenges and help you begin developing a practical carbon reduction plan tailored to your organisation.

Whether you’re considering heat pumps, solar PV, insulation upgrades or simply want to understand where to start, we’ll provide independent technical advice based on over 18 years’ experience in sustainable building design and retrofit.

Sessions are available either at our office in Durley or via Microsoft Teams, making them accessible to organisations across the district.

Book a Free Carbon Clinic If your organisation is responsible for a community building and would like independent advice on reducing energy costs and planning for a lower-carbon future, we’d love to help.
